Sheriff's deputies say a man charged with strangling an English professor in July 2008 has died in his Los Angeles County jail cell.Lt. Pat Nelson says Marlon Martinez died on Christmas Day in a six-person cell at Men's Central Jail. He says deputies conducting a security check found the 22-year-old Long Beach man in respiratory distress and were unable to revive him.

Drugmaker Vivus Inc. said Tuesday it asked regulators to approve its drug candidate Qnexa as a treatment for obesity.Vivus said it has filed a new drug application with the Food and Drug Administration. A week ago, competitor Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. said it filed for approval of its own experimental obesity drug, lorcaserin. Orexigen Therapeutics plans to request marketing approval for its product Contrave32 in the first half of 2010.

Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. said Tuesday it has settled its legal dispute over patent rights with German rival Infineon Technologies AG, and the two have signed a cross-licensing agreement.Fairchild said it will take a $6 million charge in the fourth quarter related to the deal. Infineon said it will get payments from Fairchild as a part of the settlement but did not give specific figures.
