Police say burglars stole a large safe during a break-in at a southern Indiana church.The Jennings County Sheriff's Department says St. Anne's Catholic Church near North Vernon was broken into either late Sunday or early Monday. Someone forced open a rear door of the church and took the safe estimated to weigh more than 700 pounds.

A 1 1/4-mile bridge along a northwestern Indiana expressway that was closed for safety reasons last month will be torn down and transportation officials are considering whether the structure will be replaced.Officials decided against trying to repair the span on Indiana 912 after reviewing additional inspection reports about the damage, including significant corrosion where the 70-foot-tall concrete and steel piers meet the bridge deck over the Indiana Harbor Canal in East Chicago.
BLOOMINGTON
An Indiana University professor was fatally stabbed in his Bloomington home and police have arrested a man on a preliminary charge of murder.Authorities did not immediately identify the 53-year-old man who was found dead Monday morning. English Department chairman Jonathan Elmer confirmed Tuesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the victim was Don Belton, an assistant professor of English at IU.
WEST LAFAYETTE
Purdue University is beefing up security at the campus' computer labs following the theft of 75 computers from two buildings.Officials say 60 computers were taken Saturday from Stanley Coulter Hall, while 15 computers were taken Dec. 18 from the Civil Engineering Building.

HUNTERTOWN
Police say a 9-year-old boy was critically injured when the sled he was riding slid onto a northern Indiana road and was hit by an SUV.Allen County sheriff's Sgt. Steve Stone says the boy was sledding unsupervised when he was hit Monday afternoon on a road near Huntertown, about 10 miles north of Fort Wayne.
INDIANAPOLIS
More than 60 Indiana National Guard soldiers are returning from a 10-month deployment to Afghanistan, where they worked with farmers to improve the production and marketing of their crops.National Guard officials say 63 members of the 1-19th Agribusiness Development Team are expected to arrive in Indianapolis early Wednesday. A welcoming ceremony is planned at Stout Field.
MUNCIE
Fire badly damaged a Muncie funeral home although its owners hope to reopen within a month.The fire broke out Monday afternoon, spreading throughout the upstairs living quarters of the Gholar & Gholar Funeral Home and partially collapsing the roof. Willie Gholar Jr. says no one was hurt in the fire and no bodies were inside the building at the time.
FORT WAYNE
Authorities say two teenagers found dead over the weekend in the garage of a Fort Wayne home died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.Allen County's chief deputy coroner identified those who died as 18-year-old Klu Tal Eh Day and 17-year-old Dah Eh Moo. Dick Alfeld says their deaths were not suspicious.
