A planned memorial to New Hampshire's state symbol, the Old Man of the Mountain, has fallen on hard times - much as the profile rocks of the Old Man fell off his mountain cliff in Franconia Notch State Park and crumbled to bits in May 2003.The famed rock outcropping, which appeared to be the profile of a man, hung 1,200 feet above Profile Lake before it disintegrated. The profile has been memorialized on New Hampshire driver's licenses and on the state's commemorative quarter.
ALLENSTOWN
The Allenstown, N.H., police department is set to send half its force to Afghanistan.Two officers are leaving in April as part of an Army Reserve military police detachment. The other officer is leaving in September with a Massachusetts National Guard unit.

A Lowell, Mass. man has struck a plea agreement with prosecutors that effectively reduces the prison sentence he is serving for firing a shotgun at his ex-wife at a New Hampshire mall.Arthur Kousounadis was convicted two years ago of felony criminal threatening in the December 2006 shooting at Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua.

Maine still has the edge in moose and lobster, but for the first time in more than two centuries, New Hampshire's human population exceeds that of its neighbor to the east.Both states have about 1.3 million residents, but new U.S. Census Bureau estimates released Wednesday put New Hampshire's population ahead by 6,274 people. The last time New Hampshire's population exceeded that of Maine was in 1800, when it had 184,000 residents to Maine's 152,000.
LACONIA
Police say an ambulance idling outside a New Hampshire hospital was stolen and the suspect needed to be subdued with a stun gun after being tracked down 18 miles away.WMUR-TV reports that 26-year-old Stephen Cummings Jr. of Nashua has been charged with stealing the ambulance Tuesday afternoon. Police needed a "rolling roadblock" to get him to stop the ambulance.

NASHUA
A New Hampshire woman has been convicted of second-degree murder for hitting a man with her car after he taunted her for being a New York Yankees fan.The Nashua Telegraph reports that jurors returned the guilty verdict against 45-year-old Ivonne Hernandez late Monday afternoon, a few hours after hearing closing arguments. She was accused of killing 29-year-old Matthew Beaudoin in a Nashua parking lot in May 2008.
