A New Mexico construction company has been selected by the state Spaceport Authority to work on the flight apron at the Spaceport America site in southern New Mexico.The Spaceport Authority's board of directors reviewed proposals from several contractors before choosing David Montoya Construction Inc.

A group of environmentalists pledged Monday to file petitions and lawsuits over the next 36 days to persuade the Obama administration to make protection of endangered plants and animals a priority.Listings under the Endangered Species Act have reached an all-time low, while the number of plants and animals that need protection is growing, said Nicole Rosmarino, the wildlife program director for WildEarth Guardians.
GALLUP
The largest and most comprehensive exhibition on the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II will be on display at the Gallup Cultural Center through Jan. 29.Part of the Southwest Inaugural 2009 Tour of "Our Fathers, Our Grandfathers, Our Heroes," the exhibit traces the story of the famed U.S. Marine Corps Navajo Code Talkers. It begins with the original pilot group of 29 volunteers, who in 1942 developed and tested the original Navajo Code. Proven fast and accurate, the Marine Corps recruited nearly 400 more Navajos who utilized the code, sending and receiving encrypted messages throughout the Pacific island hopping campaign. The ingenuity of the Navajo Code Talkers baffled Japanese cryptographers and greatly helped in the effort to win the war in the South Pacific.Of the original Code Talkers, about a handful are still living, most in Arizona and New Mexico.

Hundreds of tons of salt excavated from the Department of Energy's underground nuclear waste dump in southeastern New Mexico are destined for cattle feed in Texas.The DOE's Carlsbad field office has reached an agreement with Magnum Minerals LLC of Hereford, Texas, which will buy up to 300,000 tons of salt from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, known as WIPP.

The Farm Service Agency says it will issue nearly $3 million in payments to dairy farmers in New Mexico.The payments will be made through the Dairy Economic Loss Assistance Program.

Jahmar Young scored 26 points and Jonathan Gibson added 24 as New Mexico State beat Texas Southern 79-75 on Wednesday night.New Mexico State (6-6) rattled off a 13-4 run midway through the second half, highlighted by 3-pointers from Young, Wendell McKines and Gordo Castillo, as the Aggies went up 70-60 with just under 10-minutes remaining in the contest. McKines finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

North America's largest solar energy services provider and a Western utility are planning to install five photovoltaic solar facilities in southeastern New Mexico.SunEdison and Xcel Energy's Southwestern Public Service Company say the 50 megawatt project will be one of the largest in North America. The five installations will be capable of generating enough electricity to power more than 10,000 homes.
SUNLAND PARK
Sunland Park racetrack officials are celebrating after their signature event, the Sunland Derby, finally was designated a graded stakes race.The American Graded Stakes Committee made the Sunland Derby a Grade 3 event. It capped a four-year campaign by Sunland Park owner Stan Fulton and placed the $800,000 race, scheduled for March 28, firmly on the path to the Kentucky Derby.

The chief executive officer of First State Bancorporation has resigned a week after the company was warned it no longer meets the minimum $1 per share requirement to be listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market.Michael Stanford's resignation is effective Dec. 31.
