A pair of North Carolina specialty outsourcing companies are forgoing taxpayer grants as the recession hits health care and financial services differently.A state committee that oversees the major incentives program used to lure expanding companies on Tuesday decided to cancel a 2006 deal with Hewitt Associates Inc. The Illinois-based company had planned to bring 900 new jobs to Charlotte. Those positions didn't happen as the global financial crisis hit the city's banks hard.

Police in North Carolina have identified a man killed last week and have charged a former Charlotte minor league hockey player with his death.The Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday that authorities identified 32-year-old Yuriy Anatolevich Kharutokov as the victim of a December 20 killing.

Arigene Co., a Korean medical equipment maker, said Tuesday it is terminating its tender offer for outstanding shares of biopharmaceutical company Trimeris Inc.Arigene couldn't secure enough financing for the offer, the company said.
ASHEVILLE
Utilities in western North Carolina are making progress in restoring service to customers who lost electricity in a Christmas Day ice storm.Progress Energy Inc. reported that more than 700 customers in Buncombe County were without power Tuesday morning following an ice storm Friday. Service was expected to be restored late Tuesday.

Freshman Dexter Strickland scored a season-high 18 points, including a key 3-pointer late, to help No. 9 North Carolina beat Rutgers 81-67 on Monday night.Deon Thompson added 14 points for the Tar Heels (10-3), who played without injured fifth-year senior Marcus Ginyard. North Carolina turned in a relatively ho-hum performance coming out of a five-day Christmas break, gradually increasing a six-point halftime lead to 17 midway through the second half.

Brendan McKillop scored 19 points to lead Davidson to a 79-50 win over Penn on Monday night.McKillop led four players in double figures for Davidson (5-8). Jake Cohen scored 12 points, while Will Archambault and Ben Allison scored 10 each.

Joy Cheek scored 16 points to help No. 8 Duke defeat North Carolina Central 117-28 on Monday night in the biggest rout in school history.Karima Christmas added 15 points for the Blue Devils (10-2), whose 89-point margin of victory was the sixth biggest in women's Divsion I basketball over the past 10 years according to STATS.
GREENSBORO
Al-Farouq Aminu had 23 points and 17 rebounds and Wake Forest blocked a school-record 16 shots in a 75-60 victory against North Carolina-Greensboro on Monday night.Ari Stewart and L.D. Williams had 11 points apiece for the Demon Deacons (9-2). Wake Forest shot 44.6 percent, hit 37.5 percent of its 3-pointers and used a late 16-6 run to break open a surprisingly tight game and win its fifth straight.
