National Steak and Poultry is voluntarily recalling about 248,000 pounds of beef it said might be contaminated with a strain of E. coli bacteria. The company said the meat could be linked to illnesses in six states.The Owasso-based company and the U.S. Agriculture Department announced the recall on Thursday. National Steak and Poultry says on its Web site the beef products "could potentially be implicated in an outbreak" of illnesses related to E. coli.

Oklahoma athletic officials say more than 700 tickets have been sold as part of the university's Tickets for Troops program.The program allows fans to buy tickets for the Sun Bowl, in which Oklahoma will play No. 19 Stanford on Thursday in El Paso, Texas, and donate them to U.S. military members. OU says it will stop selling tickets for the program at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Urban Meyer's decision to take a leave of absence at Florida, instead of resigning, has removed a potential distraction for the Oklahoma Sooners as they prepare for the Sun Bowl.When Meyer announced Saturday he was resigning because of health concerns, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops immediately was mentioned prominently as a candidate to replace Meyer, even as the Sooners were arriving in El Paso, Texas, to prepare for Thursday's game against No. 19 Stanford.

A fierce Christmas storm dumped more snow and ice across the nation's midsection Friday after stranding travelers as highways and airports closed and leaving many to celebrate the holiday just where they were.Meteorologists predicted the slow-moving storm would glaze highways in the East with ice through Christmas night and that gusty thunderstorms would hamper the South. An ice storm warning was issued for parts of West Virginia and the Blue Ridge mountains in North Carolina and Virginia, while a wind chill advisory cautioned of temperatures as low as 30 below zero in Montana.
