Three former officers and an attorney who worked for a defunct Pittsburgh-area medical staffing company have agreed to settle stock fraud claims filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission.The settlements with the executives of World Health Alternatives Inc. must still be approved by a federal judge.
PITTSBURGH
Officials at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh want to display a ballet curtain designed by Salvador Dali that has been in storage since it was donated to the museum 33 years ago.The curtain is more than 26 feet high and more than 49 feet wide. It depicts a struggle between the mythological characters the Minotaur and Theseus. Dali painted it for the 1942 production of "Labyrinth," based on the myth of Theseus, that was performed at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
HARRISBURG
A casino trade association is rebutting a state lawmaker's suggestion that someone from the group should have registered under the state's lobbying disclosure law.A Pennsylvania Casino Association official wrote in a response letter that its activities didn't meet the state's legal definition of lobbying.
LANCASTER
Herley Industries Inc., which designs and makes microwave technology solutions for the defense, aerospace and medical industries, said Tuesday that it received a contract worth up to $16 million from Composite Engineering Inc. for avionics products.Herley will be responsible for providing command and control transponders, identification-friend-or-foe transponders, power distribution assemblies, electro-explosive devices and integrated flight controllers.
HARRISBURG
Pennsylvania's highest court ruled that the state constitution does not prohibit the governor from continuing to employ and pay state employees during a budget impasse.The state Supreme Court on Monday sided with state workers' unions and against the position that Gov. Ed Rendell had taken in the months leading up to the July 2008 budget deal.
PHILADELPHIA
More foreign travelers landed at Philadelphia International Airport this year than last, making it one of only three airports in the country that saw an increase in international visitors.Official international visitor figures won't be out until the spring but Convention and Visitor Bureau officials have been looking at airport arrivals and some other preliminary indicators.
SUGAR NOTCH
Officials in a small northeastern Pennsylvania borough are questioning a church's plan to house a group of homeless men for a week.Holy Family Church in Sugar Notch, Luzerne County, wants to house around 40 homeless men for a week in January. The church got a notice from the borough saying that's a violation of local zoning laws punishable by a $500-a-day fine.
PITTSBURGH
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty for a Pittsburgh man who used a 10-pound sledgehammer to kill his wife and autistic son so they wouldn't see his trial on sexual assault charges against his stepdaughter.Fifty-eight-year-old Kenneth Hairston's appeal focused on whether aspects of that sex trial should have been mentioned at his double murder trial.
PITTSBURGH
A Pittsburgh police sergeant has been scheduled for an internal disciplinary hearing for allegedly slapping his former girlfriend so hard he dislocated her jaw.Forty-two-year-old Eugene Hlavac (huh-LAH'-vac) Jr. has been ordered to stand trial on simple assault in the incident Dec. 18.
CLEARVILLE
A prosecutor says alcohol likely played a role when a western Pennsylvania woman allegedly fatally stabbed her husband during a domestic dispute.Forty-five-year-old Terri Lynn Showalter has been held in the Bedford County Jail since shortly after her arrest Sunday night in Clearville.
