The gap in South Dakota's current state budget can be fixed by taking $15.8 million from several funds that hold excess money, the governor's budget director said.Using the money to balance the current budget will not hurt those funds' ability to cover their obligations, state budget director Jason Dilges said.

A couple were charged in federal court in Sioux Falls with faking the husband's death to collect on life insurance. A woman, 39, and her 45-year-old husband pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. The wife was free on bond while the husband was being held without bond.Authorities said the woman claimed that her husband had died after eating bad oysters during a family vacation in Malaysia in 2003. She eventually settled the insurance case with two insurance companies for $2 million.

Two South Dakota car dealers who sued General Motors in May after it sent letters ending franchise agreements have informed the federal court that they are dropping their case against the Detroit automaker.A Sioux Falls law firm representing Springs Auto Inc. of Wessington Springs and Yankton Motor Co. of Yankton on Friday informed the U.S. District Court in Sioux Falls that the action could be dismissed.

A former South Dakota lawmaker convicted of raping his two foster daughters has sent news organizations what he claims is a copyright notice that seeks to prevent the use of his name without his consent.A letter and an accompanying document labeled "Common Law Copyright Notice" said former state Rep. Ted Alvin Klaudt is reserving a common-law copyright of a trade name or trademark for his name. It said no one can use his name without his consent, and anyone who does would owe him $500,000.

Last week's snowstorm in eastern South Dakota further slowed the already-late corn harvest.The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that the corn harvest advanced only 9 percentage points over the week, to 82 percent complete. That compares with 99 percent on average.

The Southeast Development Foundation in Sioux Falls is getting a $500,000 grant from the federal Economic Development Administration.The money will be used to replenish a revolving loan fund, which will provide new low-interest loans to businesses hurt by flooding in 2008.
