The birth mother of a 7-year-old Virginia girl must transfer custody of the child to the woman's former lesbian partner, a Vermont judge has ruled.Vermont Family Court Judge William Cohen ordered Lisa Miller of Winchester, Va., to turn over daughter Isabella to Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven at 1 p.m. Friday at the Virginia home of Jenkins' parents.

ARLINGTON
A truck carrying propane gas has crashed on a snow-covered Vermont road. No one has been injured.The truck leaked oil and transmission fluid. But there was no report of any escape of propane, an explosive gas often used in barbecues and home heating systems.

Stymied by snow, frozen ground and a vague lead, homicide investigators have postponed a search for the remains of an elderly woman with Alzheimer's disease who police say was shot to death and incinerated by her daughter and buried by her grandson."Unfortunately, Vermont in winter really doesn't help us out when we're trying to do this type of search," said Major Ed Ledo, commander of the Vermont State Police's criminal division. "You're putting people out there in below-zero weather with wind blowing, and you're trying to dig through frozen ground. Not very productive."

The Vermont Department of Health says ground beef from a farm in Shelburne is being recalled because of possible E. coli contamination.The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service says butcher shop Harrington and Sons Packing, of Williston, recalled approximately 68 pounds of ground beef products that were produced on Dec. 15.

The votes are in: Asked to pick their favorite, more than 3,500 people polled on their choice for a replacement Lake Champlain Bridge have chosen something called a Modified Network Tied Arch Bridge.The Vermont Agency of Transportation and the New York State Department of Transportation say the votes were cast by people using the Internet or attending public meetings held Dec. 12.

FairPoint Communications Inc. has named a former Vermont legislator and secretary of administration to be the company's new state president.In the newly created position, Michael Smith will be responsible for all regulatory matters, government relations and economic development in Vermont. He begins the job Jan. 4.

The Lake Champlain ferry between Ticonderoga, N.Y., and Orwell, Vt., is running again.Officials say the ferry was closed Friday and Saturday because of weather conditions.
BURLINGTON
Jawan Carter scored 26 points to lead Delaware to a 56-50 victory over Vermont on Sunday.Carter shot 7-for-16 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line for the Blue Hens (3-7). Kelvin McNeil added 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
