Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell wants the federal government to move forward with offshore energy exploration off of Virginia's coast.In a letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, McDonnell argued against any further delay in an offshore lease sale scheduled for 2011. The Republican contends the exploration for oil and natural gas resources in an environmentally responsible manner is important in this down economy.

A state legislator is renewing his effort to undo an administrative order requiring Virginia State Police chaplains to deliver non-denominational prayers at official events.Del. Charles W. Carrico, a retired state trooper, claims the 2008 directive from State Police Superintendent W. Steven Flaherty violates the chaplains' constitutional right to free exercise of religion.

Dominion Virginia Power is still considering plans to build a carbon capture and storage project at its new Wise County plant, despite failing to secure federal stimulus money.The utility had hoped stimulus funding would cover half the cost of the $580 million carbon capture facility at the new Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center. The 585-megawatt coal-fired power plant is scheduled to go online in 2012.

More than 6,000 sailors from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group are preparing for a regularly scheduled six-month deployment.The strike group is scheduled to ship out Saturday.
RICHMOND
Virginia State Police say more people died in traffic crashes on the state's highways during this year's Christmas holiday weekend.Preliminary reports show that 10 people died in eight crashes during the four-day period that began Thursday. That's four more traffic fatalies than last year, even though the 2008 counting period was one day longer.

Monica Wright scored 28 points and No. 23 Virginia beat Samford 69-60 in the opening round of the Cavalier Classic on Monday night.Wright also had nine rebounds and six steals for the Cavaliers (8-3), who led 35-31 at halftime. Chelsea Shine and Simone Egwu had 10 points apiece.
