Cheyenne's mayor has nominated the Avon, Colo., police chief to become Cheyenne's new police chief.Mayor Rick Kaysen announced on Wednesday that Brian Kozak is his choice to fill the vacancy left by former Chief Bob Fecht's retirement in August.

The Wyoming Department of Employment reports that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stayed about the same from October to November.The rate dropped 0.2 percentage points to 7.2 percent in November.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
The East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is now open after crews used a howitzer in recent days to trigger avalanches on Sylvan Pass.The East Entrance opened Tuesday morning. All park entrances are now open.

Micaela Cocks scored 17 points as Oregon jumped out to a big early lead and held off Wyoming 78-66 on Sunday.The Ducks (9-2) bothered the Cowgirls with a smothering full-court press, scored the game's first 11 points and led by as much as 22 in the first half. Oregon forced 26 Wyoming turnovers, including 21 in the first half.

The University of Wyoming says it's lending the well-preserved skull and tusks of a large Columbian mammoth to a traveling exhibition of mammoths and mastodons put together by The Field Museum in Chicago.The 11,500-year-old skull is a popular exhibit at the school's Geological Museum.

Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal is supporting a Texas company's proposal to build a major plant for turning coal into gasoline.The U.S. Department of Energy is weighing an application from DKRW Advanced Fuels LLC of Houston for a loan to help build the proposed $2.7 billion coal-to-gasoline plant.

Five environmental groups are voicing concern about a soon-to-be-implemented National Park Service policy that would enable parks to share profits from research within their boundaries.The plan would be impractical and expensive, the groups said Wednesday, while compromising resource protection and ethical principles. They called on Park Service Director Jon Jarvis to abandon the idea.
