Rajon Rondo signs extension with Celtics

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo beat the Monday deadline for members of the 2006 draft class to sign extensions. Rondo signed a five-year, $55-million extension with Boston.

Just a few days ago negotiations appeared to be dead between Rondo and the Celtics. Rondo wanted to be paid similarly to other premier NBA point guards while the Celtics were hoping to retain Rondo on a discount.

Both parties came to terms Sunday night and appear to be happy.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to extend Rajon's contract," said Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge. "We believe that he is one of the elite point guards in the NBA and has a tremendous future ahead of him."

"I'm excited, thankful, humbled," Rondo said. "Nothing changes, though. There's still one goal in mind. It's a great opportunity, but I'm focused on winning a championship."

The Celtics appear to be in championship form after a dominant 4-0 start to the 2009/10 NBA season. With the ink dried on Rondo's extension the C's can now focus on another NBA title with no distractions.
