The Toyota 4Runner described by Consumer Reports as “one of the better SUVs that are fit for serious off-roading” is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. But, the vehicle that debuted in 1984, is going into its 5th generation with lots more attitude. For 2010 the 4Runner is taller, longer and wider and naturally more pumped. Powered by a new 4.0-liter V6, with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, the engine produces 34 horsepower more than the prior V6. And both the 4x2 and the 4x4 models get an EPA-estimated 19mpg combined, an improvement of over five percent.
We haven’t driven the 4Runner yet but from videos taken on the Rubicon (see below) this truck kicks on the trail. What we did note was the super-smart pull-out cargo deck capable of carrying up to 440 pounds of weight. And for tailgating or hangin’, the sound system has a party mode for hearing music in the rear hatch. Now that’s attitude!
