Not to be confused with Oktoberfest, but Wurstfest in New Braunfels is a German inspired beer drinking, polka band playing strudel of a good time. Known as the “Ten Day Salute to Sausage” the festival started as a tribute to the German founders of New Braunfels, to celebrate their 116 year old sausage recipes from local cafes, meat markets, and grocery stores. The Wurstfest has now become a two week party with a carnival, local art show, polka bands, Dutch orchestras and yodelers. You can buy pitchers of beer and walk around the German town fair grounds with a sausage on a stick, or sit at a long wood table with rowdy strangers at Wursthalle singing old fashioned songs in German. There are many men dressed in lederhosen and actual barmaids at the biergarten while you listen to oomph music, stand on your chair and raise your stein as you sway to the tuba music. No festival would be complete without crazy hats. Unusual head gear is sold and worn at festival, so be fearless and sport that jester’s hat you accidentally bought during the Renaissance Fair, wear it proudly because at the Wurstfest, multi-color velvet is allowed, even encouraged.
If you like German music and beer, you’ll love the food. Located in the Marktplatz, are at least 30 food booths serving every kind of fried confection you can put on a stick. You can eat and walk or sit on the concrete wall just outside the Marktplatz and enjoy the Guadalupe River. Wurstfest is located at the entrance of Landa Park just off Landa St.
