If we talk about living a green lifestyle we are implying that we have a limited impact on our environment. I have made my point clear in other articles that this must be a total concept, and that all aspects of new technology must be looked at to ensure that we are not simply displacing the environmental risks. I am now convinced, that my philosophy is not being considered when it comes to lithium ion batteries.
I recently had the chance to read the material safety data sheet on the electrolyte used in lithium ion batteries, and this stuff is scary. vapors from the substance can cause death, and prolong exposure will cause liver and kidney damage. It produces hydroflouric acis when in contact with water, is explosive in confined areas, and since the fumes are heavier than air they will travel along the ground and can flash back over a great didtance.
I can't help but think that if I carried a container of this stuff in my car I would probably be arrested as a terrorist, but the "experts" are advocating the use of these batteries in our cars. Is anyone once again considering the environmental impact of someday recycling these batteries? We must step back and take a total look at inovation from all aspects before making it mainstream. failure to do this will only put us in a worse circumstance as time goes by
