The doily is back, and not just under your favorite cupcakes. There are more creative ways than ever to display your grandmother’s heirlooms without looking like your grandmother’s house.

The doily bowl is an unmistakably classic look and perfect for holding your precious rings or as a table decoration. This is an easy craft and makes a wonderful hostess gift. Simply pour fabric stiffener (found at any craft store) into a glass bowl and soak your doily until completely saturated. While it is soaking, place a smaller bowl upside down and cover with saran wrap. Lay your wet doily over the bowl and let dry completely, about 24 hours.

Another creative way to decorate with doilies comes from the very talented Sweet Paul. He has sewn together doilies to create a table runner. You can see the different shades of white due to the aging process as well. He also has a model wearing the runner as a scarf, so creative.

This same idea can be used to create a border along the edge of a bedspread. Simply pin the doilies in place until the desired look is achieved and then carefully sew them onto the spread. It not only gives them their proper attention, you are guaranteed to have an original look.

If you do not wish to use the heirlooms you have tucked away in such a permanent way, the very best place to find vintage fabrics, doilies and lace is at the Austin City Wide Garage Sale. Last month they had four huge tables of them, each selling for the low price of four dollars each. Imagine the possibilities!
