My granddaughter has been diagnosed ADHD so her teachers and I have developed a daily reporting system to help keep her on track and focused. At the end of each day I receive an email from her teacher listing her homework assignments, along with an update on her behavior for the day. Whenever she has a ‘blimp’ on her daily report for inappropriate behavior, she always starts out her rebuttal by saying, “Okay, but in my defense…” Then she proceeds to give me her sanitized version of what occurred.

As Christians, we are accountable for our ‘blimps’ or sins. Though we’ve been forgiven, that does not preclude us from being held accountable for our sins. Moreover, the Bible tells us that we must confess our sins. 1 John 1:9 reads, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (KJV)

Indulge me for a moment. Suppose we had to defend every sin we’ve ever committed? Can you imagine how many times we might have to say, ‘Okay, I did that, but in my defense…?” Like my granddaughter, we can blame others for our actions, or like the comedian Flip Wilson used to say, we can claim “the devil made me do it,” but in the end we are still accountable for our actions.

I try to live a good life, but because I’m only human I know that I falter and, yes sometimes completely fail, but I’m so thankful that I know how to get back on track. I’m grateful that even when the old creature and new creative war within me, ultimately the new one wins out. Where once upon a time my life was raggedy, unfulfilling and riddled in sin, now I only have patches and ‘blimps’ on the screen. I have a desire to recognize my sin, repent of them and return to God. That gives me hope.  These days whenever I waver or grow weary, I need only look behind me to see the life that I left for the one that I have now. Nothing or no one, but the blood of Jesus can wash away my sins and make me whole again. And, I’m so thankful that I don’t have to say, “…but in my defense.”
