On this Sunday morning, an unusually high amount of South Jersey residents traveled to the Camden Waterfront, but today was not a typical day for the county seat. Today, the President of the United States made a visit to Camden to support Governor Jon Corzine’s re-election bid. Before the Governor and President arrived, the crowd was entertained with the soulful sounds of The Infernos. Then greetings were given by Mayor Gwendolyn Faison, County Democratic Co-Chairman Donald Norcross, Assemblywoman Nilsa Cruz-Perez, Senator Stephen Sweeney, and Senator Dana Redd. The theme of “Keep It Going” was repeated throughout the event. “Cities like Camden and urban centers are going to come back, but if Camden is going to come back we have to keep it going," remarked Senator Dana Redd in her greetings to the crowd.
Jon Corzine spoke briefly before the president appeared. During his speech, he highlighted his achievements over the term he has served as Governor; which included insuring more NJ children, passing paid family leave, and school construction in urban centers. He also made a point to highlight the similarities between himself and the president. "Obama believes healthcare is a right and not a privilege and so do I," remarked Corzine.
When Obama finally arrived the room immediately became excited. "I am here because we are two days away form re-electing Jon Corzine," the President remarked upon taking the podium. He then went on to speak about how last year people were energized about the presidential election and that the same energy was needed for the upcoming election to re-elected the governor.
