If you are making a trip to visit the new USS New York on Pier 88 on Manhattan's West Side, pair the visit with a trip to the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum a short walk away. For historians and tourists, the contrast between the new naval ship, crafted with steel from the World Trade Center, and the historic Intrepid, which served from World War II onward till its retirement, is a unique opportunity to see two great ships almost literally side-by-side.

One year ago this month, the Intrepid Sea, Air, Space Museum re-opened after a two-year renovation. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum features two historic American naval vessels for visitors to explore. The Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Intrepid was commissioned in 1943 and participated in World War II, the space race, the Cold War and the Vietnam War. The submarine USS Growler is the only intact strategic diesel-powered submarine that fired nuclear missiles open to the public anywhere in the world. The museum has 30 aircraft that include two of the fastest in the world, the super-secret A-12 Blackbird spy plane and the Anglo-French luxury airliner Concorde, as well as early helicopters that cruise at today’s highway speeds and even slower.

The USS New York will be here in New York for its official commissioning till November 11. She is free to the public to board. Please visit my Examiner article about the USS New York for information on openings and what not to bring: http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-2022-Long-Island-Travel-Examiner~y2009m11d1-Visit-the-Navys-USS-New-York-Nov-411-2009-built-from-World-Trade-Centers-steel

The bow stem of USS New York (LPD 21) was constructed with 7.5 metric tons of salvaged steel from the World Trade Center. The primary mission of LPD 17-class amphibious transport dock ships is the transport and deployment of necessary combat and support elements of Marine expeditionary units and brigades.

The ship will embark approximately 720 troops and have the capability of transporting and deploying air cushion (LCAC) or conventional landing craft as well as expeditionary fighting vehicles (EFV). The ship will also be augmented by helicopters or vertical take off and landing aircraft MV 22 Ospreys. These ships will support amphibious assault, special operations and expeditionary warfare missions well into the first half of the 21st century.

The USS New York arrived at Pier 88 (at 48th Street and 12th Avenue). For further information, visit www.ussny.org.

Usually closed on Mondays, the Intrepid will be specially-opened on Monday Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. due to the USS New York's special activities nearby.
