In the quaint little town of Heathrow, a unique group of enthusiasts entered a London hotel with many hoping for a once in a lifetime experience. A convention was happening, Hallowhedon, and for some it would be just another celebrity meet and greet, but for others, it would be the first time to experience this world at all. This event attracted fans from all over the world including, Greece, Australia, Scotland, Germany, the U.S, and many locals.
Joss Whedon is the creator of several hit shows which include, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse and several more. This past weekend, the fans got the opportunity to mingle with James Marsters, Nicholas Brendon, Mercedes McNab, Mark Lutz and James Leary. There were celebrity talks, photograph sessions, autograph sessions, encounters with each individual celebrity and three nights of themed parties. Fans were given the opportunity to take part in an auction which included a private dinner with James Marsters in his hotel room which went for €900. Each of the guests chairs were auctioned and autographed along with a variety of memorabilia from Joss’s creations.
Being one of the fans who attended this convention, I have to say that I had the time of my life. I got to meet and mingle with most all of the celebrities who attended and actually got to have drinks and play cards with one of them. Other than meeting the amazing guests, many new friends were made and a new yearly vacation has been planned. Below is my summary of each guest who attended the convention. If you ever get the chance to go to a Hallowhedon convention, you should. As I said before, I had the time of my life!
James Marsters (Spike) – Unfortunately James had experienced an accident on one of the sets and was
recovering from a spinal injury. He could not sit, so he stood most of the time and even had to lie on a stretcher to sign autographs. I know he didn’t want to disappoint his fans by canceling at the last minute, but I could also see how much pain he was in. During his photograph sessions, we were told not to touch him because of this, but James still was his charming self and made each photograph very personable from what I could see. Not quite sure how the private dinner went, but the bidding came down to myself and the lady who actually won. All in all, I think James did his best to please his fans and was a stoic participant about the whole situation.
Mercedes McNab (Harmony) – Being the only female on the panel, at times I felt that the men
overshadowed her a bit, but she actually seemed to be very sweet and sort of humble. I will say that she was very accommodating to me because she actually left her autograph signing ten minutes early and hers was the only one that I had not received yet. She personally took the time to stop and sign two autographs directly after her photo shoot which I thought was extremely nice of her to do. Some of the feedback from other fans was that she looked bored and seemed as though she really didn’t want to be on stage during the talks, but given the fact that the guys didn’t really let her get a word in, this could have something to do with that opinion. I was told that she was very sociable and sweet during her guest encounters.
Nicholas Brendon (Xander) – He was adorable, cute and very approachable. The Halloween party came equipped with our very own mechanical pumpkin and Nick actually gave it a ride. The one thing that was most requested of Nick was for him to do his Snoopy dance and he seemed very willing to entertain the fans with this each time it was asked during the talks. Nicholas attended each of the three night parties and actually had a few nice things to say to me.
Mark Lutz (The Groosalugg) – “You Know!” O.K. this was the punch line to a joke that he told in his guest encounter that I attended and has become an inside joke between some of us fans. Mark seems to be your typical nice guy. He is very funny and also attended the parties each night. He seemed to like the punch line to another joke that one of the fans told during his guest encounter which was “brown chicken, brown cow” but that’s another story all together
. After that joke, the topic of conversation seemed to stay on a pornographic subject, but it was a G rated talk. Another funny memory was during my photograph session when he told me that I must be from the Bahamas ( I guess because of my tan and my dark hair) and I replied no, I’m from Tennessee. You really had to be there to get the humor in that. So, Mark Lutz is a very nice guy.
James Leary (Clem) - One word sums him up – Hilarious. I really got to spend a little more time with him than
the others, because he actually sat down with us one night and let my daughter teach him how to play a card game (Circle of death), although I think maybe one too many beers contributed to him not really caring how the rules were played. Overall, another nice guy!
