Healthy air travel tips for the Holiday season

As the holidays are now on a fast approach, many people are finalizing their plans to visit friends and family, and, for many this means traveling by air.  These are common-sense tips to help you and your loved ones stay a bit healthier this holiday season.

The Airplane Cold

According to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Health Research, you may increase the chances of catching a cold on a plane by 100 times, however, if you have to fly these are some tips to help reduce your chances of becoming another statistic:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic drinks since they will dry you out.
  • Nasal mists have been reported to be effective in keeping your nasal passages moist (dry nasal passages are more susceptible to catching cold)
  • Keep your hands clean. Wash hands frequently.
  • Avoid using pillows and blankets on the airplane.
  • Start taking vitamins weeks before you fly to help build up your immune system.

Jet Lag

When traveling across a number of time zones, the body clock will be out of synchronisation with the destination time versus home time, and, the body's internal pattern is upset for eating and sleeping times. The speed at which someone adjusts to the new schedule depends on the individual; some people may require several days to adjust to a new time zone, while others experience little disruption.   To help minimize jet lag, follow these suggestions:

  • Get plenty of sleep before you leave.
  • Don't drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Eat well-balanced meals.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Exercise as much as you can on your trip.
  • Use sleep medicines for only a few days.
  • Get used to a new time zone by going along with the local meal and bedtime schedules.

For more information on how to stay healthier when traveling by air this holiday season, contact your doctor for his or her professional recommendation for the specific needs and requirements for you and your family.  Happy travels!
