According to St. Johns County (SJC) School Board Representative Beverly Slough, student safety is a top priority in the District.

With the tragic event in Clay County recently, the SJC School Board has been working to be even more vigilant in the fight to protect our children.

Slough indicated that there was a recent report of an incident near Cunningham Creek Elementary about a potential stranger in the area who had allegedly approached some Cunningham Creek Elementary students.

The District's Youth Resource Deputy investigated the report to determine the validity and level of threat to the children.

Fortunately, the officer found that the claim of a man in a blue car reported near the school watching students, was untrue.

School officials want to encourage parents, teachers and students not to hesitate to report suspicious activity to school administrators for investigation.

As Slough points out "We take very seriously every report of potential danger to our students. Thorough investigations are always conducted to ascertain if the reports are accurate, and appropriate actions are taken to ensure the safety of all our children."

For additional pointers on how to talk with your children about their safety as they walk or bike to school, the school board encourages you to access the district website, www.stjohns.k12.fl.us, as well as individual schools' websites.
