The Dispatch Media Group announced today that it's launching a landmark news series, “Domestic Silence: The truth about abuse in Ohio.” The series delves into the dramatic increase in domestic violence in Ohio. The number of victims seeking civil protection orders has increased an astonishing 90 percent since 2000. The Dispatch Media Group investigates the increase, its causes and what's being done about the issue in a one-of-a-kind series that will appear in multiple publications, on line and on television.
Domestic Silence: The truth about abuse in Ohio,” kicked off this week with an article in the latest edition of Columbus Parent, which will be followed by a four-part series in The Columbus Dispatch starting on Sunday, Nov. 15.
While domestic violence is escalating in Ohio, arrests and convictions in domestic abuse cases are in decline. Domestic violence charges frequently are pleaded down to lesser charges or dismissed, raising questions about how Ohio’s legal system addresses the issue. “Domestic Silence: The truth about abuse in Ohio” will explore the problems in detail.
Dispatch Media Group reporters and researchers have scoured the disturbing statistics on abuse and have heard numerous personal accounts from both the abused and abusers. The reporting shows the lifelong scars that abuse leaves on victims, children and families. A team of journalists from Fronteras, The Columbus Dispatch, WBNS-10TV, ONN, ThisWeek and Columbus Parent worked on the series to provide rich and insightful coverage.
By expanding traditional news coverage with heart-wrenching stories, educational sidebars and high-profile cases, the series details the rise in domestic violence against the elderly and between teenagers; the false sense of security offered by civil protection orders; inconsistency among suburban police agencies in dealing with domestic violence; and a deeper look at how children who witness domestic violence are affected by it.
