Are you more of a cruise the open roads type or a rider with a need for speed? Both kinds of riders--in addition to those who commute every day on their bikes, those who ride cross-country, and those who'se idea of a good time is to take two wheels to the dirt--can be found in Chicagoland.
The Motorcycle Examiners are all posing the “cruisers vs. sport bikes” question right now, and of course we’re all ready to sound off with our opinions as to which type of motorcycle we prefer. You can check the links below to find out who is riding which and who prefers what.
Now, riders are often as passionate about the kind of bike they ride as they are about the brand. While we're all in the same wind, it doesn't take too long for those who enjoy one kind of motorcycle to claim to be the only "real bikers."
And of course those who race or those who take two wheels around the world just smile and shake their heads.
Having thrown my leg over many a bike, this Examiner simply says ride what you want, enjoy what you ride, and ride safe. There's a place on the road for speed merchants (best to test the bike's limits on a track, though), tourers out to see the country, cruisers out to enjoy the day, and all riders in between.
Motorcycling is about freedom--the freedom to enjoy the kind of bike and the kind of ride you want, the freedom to change your mind, and even the freedom to own and enjoy multiple motorcycles.
Just remember that the cellphone-distracted, left-turning minivan driver is an equal opporunity threat.
