2009 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T 4Motion – in it for the long haul

November 29, 7:22 PM
by Kyle Busch, Automotive Examiner

The VW Tiguan makes its entry into the market when
many drivers want smaller capable SUVs that still provide
a commanding view of the road and go anywhere all-wheel
drive.

The foundation of the Tiguan is the Rabbit’s platform and
thus it handles twisty roads with ease. Concerning exterior
dimensions, it is the same size as the Ford Escape, but 3-7
inches shorter than the Honda CR-V and the Toyota Rav4
respectively.

Although measuring a bit less inside than the CR-V and Rav4,
this VW has spacious seats with room for four adults and space
to accommodate cargo. The rear seat can be flooded flat making
it easy to transport a new washer or television home.

As customary, this VW is more expensive than its Japanese rivals.
However, it drives like a finely bolted together machine. The
steering is accurate with just the right amount of weighting. The
suspension is taunt for a buttoned down driving experience but also
supple to give good ride quality on rough roads. This all adds up to
handling that is nimble with a highly positive driving experience.

The Tiguan has a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine making 200 hp.
VW has done a good job of wringing out any hint of turbo lag. Its
0-60 time is 7.7 seconds and it returns 25 mpg on the highway.

A front-wheel drive Tiguan starts at $23,890 and the all-wheel drive
starts at $29,565. These prices are several thousand more than the
CR-V and RAV4. To justify the extra money, the Tiguan is a vehicle
for the buyer who is interested in driving it many years and miles.
Last, but not least, the driver also gets this smaller SUV’s excellent
driving dynamics from the day of purchase.

The VW Beetle was around for a long long time - even Bob Knight
can get excited and start tossing things when he is near one!

One thing is certain about the Tiguan - it will be in it for the long haul
with you enjoying the drive!
