
Pumpkin thrown from overpass severely injures driver
Plymouth, Mich. – An unknown suspect threw a pumpkin over the Ridge Road overpass yesterday on M-14 at about 3:30 a.m. that went crashing into the front windshield of a driver’s car. The driver, Hank Kiel said he thought a bomb exploded and then he saw pumpkin guts all over his front seat. When he realized he was gushing blood from his face, he said he called 911. Taken by ambulance to the hospital, Kiel said he had to have 18 stitches and has a broken cheek bone.

Woman attacked then dragged by car
Taylor, Mich. – When Cynthia Pacheco, 68-years-old left the Seaway Marketplace in Taylor, a man was seen on surveillance video watching her enter the store and then waiting for her to leave so he could grab her purse. Police say when Pacheco fought back another man reportedly attacked her. As Pacheco was trying to hold onto her purse, the men were trying to pull her with the purse into their car. The men slammed the door on her purse and arm and then dragged her from the car a short distance. She was able to free herself however suffered a heart attack during the ordeal and still remains hospitalized. Police say they are still looking for the men who are responsible. Anyone who has information about the attack are being asked to call Taylor police.

Officer stabbed with butcher knife during altercation
Warren, Mich. – Yesterday afternoon, Warren police officers responded to a disturbance being reported at a car wash located at Groesbeck Highway and Eight Mile Road at 12:30 p.m. When the officers arrived, witnesses pointed to the home across the street from the car wash. Police say when the officers went to the home, the 20-year-old suspect went into the house, grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed one of the officers several times. The officer was reportedly cut up on the skull area and on the left side of the cheek. When an excavation crew saw the injured officer they ran over to assist him. They ran to their truck to grab rags or anything to try and stop the bleeding. The suspect was taken into custody by the other officer while the injured officer was transported to Bi-County Hospital. No information has been released as to the officer’s condition. Police say they are working on an attempted murder warrant.

Man in emergency room shot dead by police
Mount Clemens, Mich. – Jamin Totty, 32 of Chesterfield was arraigned on Nov. 6, for retail fraud and drug charges. Police say just as they were about to take Totty to jail, he complained of chest pain and was transported to the emergency room at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. Officers report Totty attempted to hide from police and grabbed a needle and threatened a Macomb County Sheriff deputy. The deputy fatally shot Totty in the heart. Not yet released, surveillance video captured the entire incident. Family members, Totty’s mother and sister admitted to Totty having trouble with the law, mental and drug problems, however said there was no need for him to have been shot in the heart. The family said they plan on hiring lawyer and launching an independent investigation into the shooting.

Detroit investigators asking for help to find missing woman
Detroit, Mich. - Regina McDaniel, 20, a student at Kaplan Career Institute studying pharmacy tech., has been missing since Wednesday. Her mother said Regina was missing on Tuesday and filed a missing persons report the next day. Regina’s mother said Regina has never been gone before and does not typically go out for more than a couple of hours on a school night. Regina drives a silver 2004 Mercury Sable, license plate BPR 457. Anyone with information is being asked to call Detroit police.

Man charged with identity theft after purchasing Blackberry phones
Troy, Mich. – While trying to purchase ten Blackberry phones, and multiple purchases last week, Shaker Jalal Assofi, 19, gave a forged business name and information documents. Assofi was successful in purchases twice according to police. Police arrested Assofi on charges of larceny and forgery. He was arraigned Wednesday on identify theft and false pretenses. A pre-exam conference is set for Monday, Nov. 9. Assofi is currently out on a $7,500 bone.

MSU student killed after being struck and dragged by car
A 19-year-old Michigan State University student was fatally struck and dragged by a vehicle Thursday night. According to Detroit police the teen was with a group of friends from MSU attending a Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena. Police reported the group was rowdy and security at the arena threatened to throw them out of the game. Identified as Ryan Rosman, police say Rosman fled the Joe Louis Arena and hid under a nearby bus. His teen friends said they received texts from the teen asking if security had stopped looking for him and if it was safe to come out of hiding. When Rosman got out from underneath the bus, he was struck by a vehicle a dragged several blocks. Rosman’s sister said her brother was a smart and selfless person and would do anything for his friends and family. While police continue the investigation, they are asking for witnesses to come forward.
Yorkshire terriers stolen from homes: One recovered and given back to owner - Detroit, Mich. -- Residents in one west side Detroit neighborhood say thieves are breaking into their homes and stealing dogs. Two teacup Yorkshire Terriers were stolen in break-ins within blocks of each other two days. Both women who owned the dogs put up reward fliers. When a man reportedly tried to sell one of the dogs at a gas station for $400, a couple recognized the dog from the flier and returned the dog to its rightful owner. However the other woman’s dog is still missing. Anyone with information is being asked to contact Detroit police.
IRS scam to file false returns - Detroit, Mich. - Twin sisters sold their children’s Social Security numbers to people who wanted to claim them as dependents on their tax returns. Federal authorities say Karhonda and Kashaunda Prophet were charged Thursday for the scam. Police say Karhonda received at least $200 and Kashaunda got at least $400. The scam didn’t work because the Internal Revenue Service became suspicious and denied the suspects their tax refunds.
New charges in fire death of Detroit fire-fighter
Detroit, Mich. – In November, 2008, fire-fighter Walter Harris died while trying to put out a fire in an abandoned house. The two-story structure fell on him. The man who was charged with setting the house on fire for $20 has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and agreed to testify against a co-defendent. Darian Dove and the alleged accomplice is reported to be Mario Willis, 27, from Detroit. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office alleges Willis took Dove, his handyman, to the house on Kirby Street and asked him to set the fire for $20. Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Willis had some connections to the house, however declined to say whether he owned it and would not discuss a motive. Fire Chief Harry Brown said if people are thinking about setting houses on fire, they need to stop and think about the fire-fighters. He said $20 wasn’t worth the fire-fighters life. Odie Uddyback, the lawyer for Willis said while their hearts go out to the Harris family, they don’t know where the proofs are.
Teen hit by train while listening to iPod
Wyandottte, Mich. – A teenager who was on the way to school was clipped by a train while listening to an iPod. Police say the 16-year-old boy who attends Theodore Roosevelt High School was hit by the front of the train at 7:45 a.m. and pushed off into the bushes. The teen was seen by witnesses hobbling over to the school’s parking lot and covered in blood. He was taken to South shore Hospital in Trenton and is being treated for a fractured skull. Police say his injuries are not life-threatening and said the train engineer sounded the horn but the teen did not look up until he was hit. Fortunately, police say the engineer saw the boy and it could have been a lot worse if the engineer didn’t try to stop the train. Police say the boy could face a misdemeanour trespassing charge which is punishable by up to 93 days in jail or a $500 fine.
15 indicted for drug trafficking: Feds say smuggling marijuana into Michigan - Detroit, Mich. – U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg said Thursday, fifteen Michigan residents have been indicted in an international drug trafficking conspiracy. The 15 people are alleged to have conspired to import more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana into the United States from Canada to distribute in metro Detroi and beyond. The indictment states the group smuggled marijuana from Toronto into Michigan through St. Joseph Island, Ontario from the year 2000 to the present. Prosecutors said the group have been smuggling between 50 to 600 pounds per trip by car, train and boat. The value of the marijuana of each trip ranged from $300,000 to well over $2 million. In an attempt to conceal their drug profits, prosecutors say homes, cars and businesses were recorded in the names of friends or relatives. Drug profits were also sent overseas to Lebanon for the construction of a substantial residence. Prosecutors say six of the 15 defendants are being charged in the money-laundering conspiracy.
