On Monday, November 9, 2009, Haddonfield Middle School will hold its 12th annual Veteran’s recognition celebration to honor local veterans who served our country.
Dr. Noah Tennant, Principal at HMS, will welcome local veterans during an assembly beginning at 9:30 a.m. John Farrell, co-coordinator of this annual event will speak to the students regarding the importance of supporting veterans, acknowledging the sacrifices made for our country and the importance of Veterans Day. The assembly will close with remarks by Dan Colombi, Commander of American Legion Post #38.
Guests will enjoy a luncheon from 10:50 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Students and faculty members will have an opportunity to speak with veterans one-on-one and ask questions about their tours of duty. In 2008, HMS participated with the U.S. National Archives and videotaped oral histories from the veterans. World War II veteran John Lauriello of the 1775 Detachment, Marine Corp. League was the first veteran to be interviewed for this project. Mr. Lauriello served from 1942 to 1946 during the first wave and occupation of Japan and was present when his division raised the American flag at Iwo Jima. The taped interviews will continue this year in hopes of capturing additional personal accounts from veterans regarding their service to the United States. Students will edit the tapes and submit final copies of the wartime experiences ‘in their own words’ for future generations to hear.
During an informal farewell, students will gather to serve desserts, thank the veterans for visiting HMS and for taking time to share their life experiences at the annual event.
