Rihanna is finally breaking her silence about being beaten up by Chris Brown -- in a series of heavily promoted TV interviews with Diane Sawyer that just happen to coincide with the pre-sale of her new album, "Rated R," on iTunes.
She also talked about the February assault in a cover story for Glamour's November issue. And she's set to appear on MTV's "It's On With Alexa Chung" next Monday.
Is this nothing more than a shameless media blitz to promote her new album?
There's nothing wrong with promoting an album. That's what she's supposed to do. But holding out on talking about the Chris Brown attack just so she could exploit it to sell records would be very bad form, especially considering her statements that she wants to help other women who have been victims of domestic violence.
The biggest obstacle to stopping domestic violence is staying silent about it. Rihanna herself says that in her Glamour interview. So why did she wait so long to talk about what happened to her? Her assailant, Chris Brown, has spoken out many times. Her perspective would have been extremely valuable, but her silence left people in the dark.
If Rihanna truly wants to be a role model and a spokesperson for women who face domestic violence, as she claims she does, she needs to keep the issue separate from promoting album sales. Hopefully she will clarify that in her lengthy interview with Diane Sawyer.
What do you think? Is Rihanna speaking out now to promote her new album?
