It took a while to discover a gem of a place in a strange little area of Tigard between southwest Hall Boulevard and Washington Square. Painted blue and white with a narrow patio jutting off its side, is a small building offering up Bavaria’s best. Enter the double doors of The Original Bavarian Sausage Company and you’re immediately immersed in the aromas of smoked meats behind a large glass display, beyond that are doors leading into a large room where one can occasionally glimpse the sausages drying on racks in the back. Among the large variety of bratwurst and frankfurters, are smoked pork chops, hams, cold cuts cheeses and spreads. The deli does it all. Fresh coleslaw, German potato salad, macaroni salad, and some of the best sauerkraut you’ll ever pucker to. You can’t have sausage without good bread and guess what? The deli has a bakery located on the east side of Portland that delivers fresh goods to the west side daily. You’ll always find a great selection of German rye breads and immensely fresh rolls, including schrippe and poppy seed and milk rolls.

If you were planning only to shop and go home think again. You may become so overwhelmed by hunger from all the great smells coming from the kitchen, that you’ll take relief in discovering you can order breakfast and lunch at the Bavarian Sausage factory as well. Choose a brat and a side dish for under $5, and browse the incredible selection of beers, including Dresden’s Radeberger Pilsner. It’s a big, crisp and delicious beer to refresh your palate with after eating a spicy Hungarian sausage. The shop offers seating in the small dining area inside or on the patio outside. The deli also offers your typical selection of cold sandwiches, or a Rueben if you prefer. Perhaps you’re in the mood for some schnitzel and salad or just a plain hamburger? There is so much product packed into this little powerhouse of a store and with all the native speakers around you, you’ll think you were in Europe.

The shelves are lined with German mustards, pickles, jams and jellies. Of course, the kids will love the selection of Haribo gummy candies, in addition to cookies and chocolates including Mozartkugeln (Mozart Balls). Unfortunately, these are not the Original Salzburg Mozartkugeln (click here to learn more), that some of us have been lucky enough to try. If you know the difference, you’ll accept no imitations. If that isn’t enough to satisfy the sweet tooth, take a gander at the bakery case where you can find éclairs, sliced cakes, and other pastries waiting to call your stomach home. The Bavarian Sausage Company also does catering for parties. You can also order custom cakes through their Bakery on Northeast Sandy Boulevard. The Bavarian Sausage Company is not open on Sundays, so plan your sausage fest accordingly.
