While Tuesday might not be your typical museum night, its the only night to catch the newest museum to spring up in my backyard: Brooklyn's other Museum of Brooklyn, or B.O.M.B.
The museum is the brainchild of architect-cum-activist Scott Witter, and was the subject of an article by Andy Newman in The New York Times last month.
Nestled in the limbo land functionally known as "near the Navy Yard" or more obscurely as Wallabout, The museum is less a collection than an appeal to preserve local endangered landmarks like the block of Victorian Era mansions that once served as a residency for officers called Admiral's Row.
The mansions, now derelict, can be viewed on Flushing Avenue between Navy Street and North Portland Ave. Most of the buildings are slated for demolition to make room for a large supermarket. The museum itself is currently located at 102 Steuben Street between Myrtle and Park, though it may be subject to community rotation from time to time.
You can't miss it- the side-by-side brick facades of the museum are covered road to roof with a sort of manifesto on preserving local architecture, done completely in Witter's chosen medium-- blue painter's tape.
The museum is only open on Tuesday nights between 7 and 9 pm, but that promises a hands-on tour of the collection conducted by Mr. Witter himself, which is the only way to experience this eclectic collection.
