Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan, supporting Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food will be having a live Facebook chat and will be answering questions about the agricultural push for organic and locally grown foods. Ms. Merrigan has been a long-time supporter of sustainable agriculture. In a recent boost from the USDA, the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food program received a $19 million grant for research programs in universities around the country.

According to the USDA website and a statement released, (Release No. 0534.09), "The 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative emphasizes the need for a fundamental and critical reconnection between producers and consumers. The effort builds on the 2008 Farm Bill, which provides for increases and flexibility for USDA programs in an effort to promote local foods."

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will be accepting questions on the Facebook live chat. Questions can be submitted before the chat and the live feed can be watched athttp://apps.facebook.com/usdalive/.
