I rip on the Sun when they do a bad job, but I also praise them when they do a great job. Today they did an excellent job.  Please read this story about the Baltimore City Foundation.  The Baltimore City Foundation is a nonprofit that is supposed to be providing "critical human resources for youth, the elderly, handicapped, and unemployed"  It is a private nonprofit that raises money that benefits city programs for the underprivileged. The Sun reveals that the city has been funneling money into this nonprofit in order to distribute it in some shady ways that include Mayor Sheila Dixon's inaugural events!

The Sun quotes Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke as saying "I don't even know what it is," when talking about the Baltimore City Foundation.  Think about that statement. How could a person who was first elected to city council in 1975 and who eventually served as President of the council not know about this organization? Either she is incompetent, senile, or a liar.

Again, I urge all of you to read the actual article. I am not going to try and recap the entire thing.

The article made me wonder about how many other local nonprofits are playing games like the ones mentioned in the article.  How many others are really tax-free ways of distributing money into for-profit or political endeavors? Baltimore is filled with supposed charitable and nonprofit organizations.

Lenwood M. Ivey is the President of the Baltimore City Foundation.

Mr. Ivey has given some money to the Conaway political machine. Frank M. Conaway Sr. is Clerk of the Circuit Court in Baltimore. The Sun says:

"The Baltimore Circuit Court shifted $1.9 million in state funds to the foundation. The funds, intended for a new court audiovisual system, improperly generated more than $86,000 interest for the court."
