It's the age-old question we all have to face at one time or another; is it better to have loved and lost, or to have never loved at all? Is it better to date the cheerleader for a week and get dumped, or for her to just laugh in your face the first time you slip her that "check yes or no" note? Is it better to have been so close to victory you could taste it and lose, or to have never thought you had a chance?

Is it more disappointing to have entered a season with hopes of a trip to Pasadena and end up in Atlanta, or to enter hopeful of getting a Meineke Car Care Bowl bid just to end up watching it from your couch? This is the question up for debate between Virginia Tech and University of Virginia fans this season.

Virginia Tech started the season ranked seventh in the Associate Press poll and was expected at the very least to compete for the ACC title. Even after early season lost to Alabama, Tech remained in the national spot light amongst the elite teams spoken of in the national title picture. The University of Virginia began this year as a predicted bottom feeder in the conference, lost to the team formally known as "The Tribe," William and Mary, and received it's only real national coverage when their mascot fell off his horse during pregame festivities.

Now it's November and reality has set in.

For the Hokies, following their Thursday night loss to UNC, it's the reality of eyeballing yet another appearance in a second tier bowl, this year's likely being the Chick-fil-A bowl according to the latest ESPN predictions.

For the Cavaliers it's sitting at 3-5, and after spending their Halloween getting beat by Duke, facing the strong possibility of at least getting to go home early for Christmas.

Now granted the season still has to be played out, but it stands to reason that no matter what happens both sets of fans will wake up in January with a least a somewhat disappointing taste in their mouths. The only question is which tastes worse, thinking you're headed to Outback for a nice steak and baked potato just to end up choking down a McRib and some cold fries, or to just face the reality that Mickey D's is the best option you have.

Which is the more bitter reality? It's hard to say.
