The London Rollergirls, the first women's flat track roller derby league in the United Kingdom, are winners of the British Airways Great Britons contest. The giveaway provides opportunities for British talent to fly to destinations that will help further their careers. Kamikaze Kitten, captain of LRG's all-star squad, London Brawling, entered the contest to help get the team to New York City to train with Gotham Girls Roller Derby.
In July, LRG hosted and won Roll Britannia, the first European roller derby tournament. Gotham Girls league president Ginger Snap was there to witness the action along with GGRD referees Hambone and Johnny Zebra. As Hambone reported on the Gotham Girls message boards: "[T]hey are definitely quite skilled -- if they were in the East Region at 2009 WFTDA East regionals, they'd definitely have beaten at least a handful of the competing teams."
Training with GGRD will provide LRG with an opportunity to strengthen their game and become even more competitive in the international derby scene. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association recently went international with the expansion of their membership to Canada. Is Europe next on the list?
