Stimulus package could come as increase in workers' take-home pay

December 2, 11:10 AM
by Darrell Proctor, Business Examiner

The most recent government stimulus plan came in the form of a paycheck from the Treasury. The next could come in the form of a bigger paycheck - from your employer.

That's among the ideas being considered by President-elect Barack Obama and his economic advisers. Rather than a payment that provides temporary help, Obama is talking about tax cuts that would provide more help over a longer term.

You can read more about the various plans being considered in this CNNMoney.com article.

One work-based option is that employers and the IRS would work together to change the amount of tax that is withheld from workers' payroll checks, based on income. Less tax would be withheld, resulting in more take-home pay. Economists see it as a better long-term stimulus solution, though it would take more time logistically to implement.
