The top 11 causes of tooth discoloration.

1. Genetics: naturally thinner enamel.

2. Age: thickness of the enamel wears down over time.

3. Poor brushing habits.

4. Injury: injuries as an adult or while teeth are forming as a child can cause discoloration.

5. Tobacco: cigarettes, cigars, pipe, dipping snuff, chewing tobacco etc.

6. Foods: tea, coffee, sodas, and certain vegetables.

7. Antibiotics: such as tetracycline and doxycycline given to children prior to age 8.

8. Chemicals: beware of chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride in mouthwashes.

9. Too much fluoride: either in water or from cleaning products.

10. Silver fillings: cast a dark grey color on teeth.

11. Medicines: antihistamines, anti-psychotics, and meds for controlling blood pressure.
