History was made today with the arrival of the amphibious transport ship USS New York in New York Harbor. She is in her namesake city for commissioning ceremonies.
Early this morning the USS New York came in under the Verazonno Bridge and upon passing the World Trade Center site she gave a 21 gun salute. She is docked Next to the USS Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum. The ship will be in New York City until Saturday November 7th, the official date of her commissioning.
This ship is historically significant and beckons to the strength and ability of America to bounce back from the worst of tragedies. The ship's bow is constructed with over 7.5 million tons of World Trade Center steel. The symbolism is beyond words really, the material where countless people perished is being used to fight back against terrorosm on the most technologically advanced warship the United States Navy has to offer. The motto "Strength Through Sacrifice, Never Forget," underscores the emotion of this ship.
She carries the latest in military hardware and can be considered as CBS 2 News put it: "an aircraft carrier for helicopters." She carries the CH-46 Sea Knight and MV-22 Osprey helicopters.
Though this ship is new, soon to be on active duty she warrants landmark status considering where her some of her steel came from.
