It was reported Wednesday that a 13-year-old cat has tested positive for the swine flu virus or H1N1. It is believed to be the first known case in a feline.
The Iowa cat's owners took their cat to the vet after it became lethargic, wouldn't eat, and was having trouble breathing.
According to an Associated Press report, the cat, which is said to be a short-haired domestic, apparently became ill after family members were said to have had flu-like symptoms. Although this is the first know feline case, there have been two known cases of ferrets dieing from the virus. Unlike the ferrets, the cat is said to have recovered.
Although it now seems that people can transmit H1N1 to their pets, it is not yet clear if it can be transmitted from animals to people. Officials have said that people should use the same measures to avoid passing the flu onto their pets that they use to prevent transmission to other humans. The report also noted that there is no swine flu vaccine for pets.
