AuctionWally's top ten reasons to attend a live auction

December 2, 11:12 AM

Auctions are Fun!
                          Auctions are fun!
Whether it's a big auction or a local country auction house, auctions are one of the last great American traditions that are still going strong in the market place.

That said, I think the biggest challenge is to get the word out to the next generation on how great auctions are, not only from an economic perspective, but as a means to go green.

I guarantee that if you attend an auction, you'll see high quality items that have left the store shelves of America years ago. Items worth recycling.

These things have made it to the auction because they've stood the test of time, they're durable, they last.

Some people say that we are a "disposable society", that we don't care about quality, that we want only the latest shiny new fad. I think they'r wrong, and so do the millions of people that attend auctions every week.

Here are my top ten reasons for attending an auction:

1) If you pick your battles and bid on the right items, you really can buy for pennies on the dollar.

2) Since most auctions take local consignments you are likely generating cash flow in you local economy.

3) The selection offered will be more diverse and unusual than anything offered elsewhere.

4) Most auctioneers sell to the walls until there is nothing left. So if you attend a weekly auction, the items offered the following week will be 100% different.

5) Fair market value, is REALLY fair market value at an auction because the buyers set the price.

6) Antiques & general merchandise auctions are Green. They are the original recyclers, and good for the planet. The production load of an antique, used item or a collectible is zero.

7) Auctions are great networking events. Before the auction starts there is a buzz of activity in the hall, carpenter's chat with homeowners and decorators. You'll see antiques people giving business cards to bankers etc.

8) Auctions are educational. You will learn about history, construction and production methods of all manner of things, the basics of trading and of course, a good deal about human nature.

9) Auctions are easy. People are often under the misconception that there is a secret club that attends auctions, or that you have to be a dealer to participate, not true. All you need is an ID and the ability to raise your hand when there is something you want. One of those you learned in kindergarten!

10) Auctions are fun! Most auctioneers are pretty witty and have a good sense of humor. They have to have these attributes as they are forced to rattle off hundreds of lots a night and must think on their feet. Now when you consider that there are dozens of potential comedians in the crowd, well, you can guess that it sometimes makes for some pretty good banter.

There are a lot of other reasons to attend an auction, but the sense of community, great bargains and entertainment value should be enough to get you in the door the first time, since auctions are addictive, you let us auctioneers worry about how to keep you coming back!
