Beachniks have their week cut out for them

On Wednesday, of course, the candidates for District 3 supervisor will be descending like locusts upon the S.F. Art Institute for another one of their scheduled debates. Phil Bronstein, the colorful former editor of both the Examiner (in its Hearst days) and Chronicle (ditto), will moderate. You still have that little crossbow, Phil? Bring it.

Seeing as how whoever wins this thing in November will be representing (or abusing) us for the next four years, you might want to show up for this beauty contest.

The debate starts at 7 p.m. but you should plan on being there by 6:30. The Art Institute, of course, is located at 800 Chestnut St., between Jones and Leavenworth.

Before that, though, there's this: The S.F. Public Library appears ready to make its formal recommendation for the remodeling of our forlorn North Beach branch, so you might learn a lot by attending a special community meeting Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

Because the library is inextricably bound to the North Beach/Joe DiMaggio Playground rehab project, not to mention the possible closure of Mason Street between Columbus and Lombard, however this plays out is going to feel like giving birth to quintuplets. But the major domos from the Main have apparently devised a plan of campaign, so come see what they're thinking.

Tuesday night the library, in its present incarnation, will be turned over to our city's poet laureate, Jack Hirschman, who's hosting another edition of Poets Eleven. The series features local poets from each of the 11 supervisorial districts reading their work. That one you can attend for sheer pleasure, and perhaps a little enlightenment. The readings begin at 7 p.m.
