Tony Long is a lifelong resident of San Francisco and has lived in North Beach twice, most recently since 1997. He spent over 30 years as an editor for newspapers and online, including a 17-year stint at the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner.

Past Is Present, Present Is Future

Two events of note in the neighborhood this evening but you'll have to pick one because they run simultaneously. Both start at 7 p.m. and both are worth your time.

The future of the North Beach/Joe DiMaggio Playground should come a bit more clearly into focus during the third public forum being held to solicit opinion on remodeling the park. From what I've heard, proposals include covering over the blacktop for more green space (an unpopular idea, understandable considering how much use the blacktop gets) and moving the children's playground to a more centralized location in the park (an idea that seems to enjoy universal acclaim).

You can go to the gymnasium at Sts. Peter and Paul Church this evening to chime in, or merely to listen.

This is a special evening for those of us who knew the artist-poet Susan Birkeland. Susie, who died of cancer at 45 in November 2006, will be celebrated with a presentation of her work at the North Beach Library. Film footage featuring Susie, taken by local film chronicler Steven "Kush" Kushner, will also be shown.

I was privileged to call Susie a friend. If you weren't, you missed out on that one.
