Riding Skyline Drive in Canon City
Riding Skyline Drive in Canon City.

As I noted last week, there aren't a lot of motorcycle events scheduled this weekend, presumably because people don't want to compete with the Sturgis Rally. I'm not sure how valid that line of thinking is. After all, as many bikers as go to Sturgis, there are many times that number who don't go. Still, if you want as many riders as possible I guess it just makes sense not to plan an event for a time when you are virtually guaranteed to lose even a few.

The one event going on makes sense. This is the Adventure Riders, whose interests run more toward riding dirt than cruising the boulevard. Their West Fest '08 starts on Friday and runs through Sunday in Lake City, at the Texan Resort. It's too late to register now but if you're interested in becoming part of this group you should check their forum at www.advrider.com.

Next week:

OK. Things start hopping again next week. Here's what's up:

The Great American Motorcycle Adventures 2008 Big Dog Ride hits Colorado Aug. 15-17. These guys are hard core. They'll be riding some of the roughest roads in the state. If you think you're good enough, check out their website for details.

Also Aug. 15-17 is the ABATE of Colorado, District One Rally on the Plains, in Yuma. The fee is $25 per person for the weekend, $15 for Saturday only. ABATE, by the way, from state to state stands for American Bikers Aimed Toward Education or A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments or whatever each group chooses. Basically it is a group that promotes motorcycling, offers rider training, and fights to protect motorcyclists' rights.

On Aug. 16 the Road Rage Bike Show comes to the O'Meara Ford Center in Northglenn, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event will benefit Progress for Prostate and admission is free. The show features motorcycles, cars, and trucks and registration is free, although a $25 registration donations is requested. Awards will be given for Best of Show, Best Paint, Best Original, Best Custom, Best Hot Rod, and Most Exotic.

The 4th Annual Ride For Life to benefit Flight For Life Colorado is set for Aug. 16. The cost is $35 Solo Rider, $45 Rider & Guest. Gather at the Jefferson County Stadium parking lot, located at West 6th Avenue and Kipling Street in Lakewood. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the ride departs at 10 a.m.

Another Aug. 16 event is Nathan's Run. This event will benefit Nathan Ruhter, who was seriously injured on June 10, 2008. The run heads out from the Rocky Mountain Fire Academy, 5440 Roslyn Street, Denver. Registration is $25 per bike.

Also on Aug. 16 is Ruff Ryding in the Rockies II, sponsored by SODO's Nightclub in Colorado Springs. Riders will gather at the Airport Comfort Inn, 2115 Aerotech Drive in the Springs and head out around 10 a.m. Call 719-271-1429 for information.

A double event will be going on in Winter Park Aug. 16 and 17: The 15th Annual Salute to America’s Veterans Rally & Festival as well as Hawgfest 2008. There is no charge for the Veterans Rally and admission for Hawgfest is $35 for one day, $60 for two. The Veterans Rally was held for many years in Cripple Creek but now has moved to Winter Park. It includes a display of the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall, a POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony and Recognition Ride, and much more. Hawgfest will feature performannces by Ted Nugent, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, War, and The Groove Hawgs.

Two competing 1,000-mile endurance rides will take place these same two days, the Colorado Classic 1000 and the 24th Annual Freewheelers 1000-in-24 Endurance Ride. The Colorado Classic 1000 is sponsored by the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado, Iron Butt Association and starts out at the Holiday Inn in Lakewood and ends in Cripple Creek. The Colorado Freewheelers event heads out from Fay Myers Motorcycle World, 7900 E. Arapahoe Road, Greenwood Village.

Lastly, on Aug. 17, the Look Twice Fund Benefit Poker Run will take off from Q's Pub, 10133 W. Chatfield in Littleton. This is a benefit for the Look Twice Campaign. Registration is $20 per rider, $10 per passenger.
