OK, I admit. This story was too good to pass up. It seems that the boundaries of what people consider good taste is being tested once again. For months, the Mt. Shasta Brewing Company (MSBC) of Weed, California has been battling the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau over the right to use a particular bottle cap for their Weed Golden Ale. The bottle cap simply states: "Try Legal Weed". It's a play on words that was meant to draw attention to the town in which the beer is made.
But the Bureau "censors" seemed to take issue with that bottle cap and declined to approve the registration of that slogan. Even the U.S. Treasury branch rejected it because drug references are banned on alcoholic beverages due to federal laws.
Well somehow, things have suddenly changed. Brewery owner Vaune Dillmann got a registered letter this week stating that it was now OK to use those bottle caps with the "Try Legal Weed" logo. It seems that the feds agreed that MSBC never intended to use their beer as a drug reference and so the bottle caps will be returning to the top of the Weed Golden Ale bottles very soon.
Dillmann celebrated and wrote a newsletter to his many supporters who have been fighting to allow him to keep the slogan. In his letter he is quoted as saying: "Weed fought the law and Weed won!"
Well now, seeing how this bottle cap was given the thumbs up, imagine what other slogans we might see next. How about this?
"Try Legal Crack" - could be a "fitting" slogan for Butt Crack Brown from the Klamath Basin Brewing Company.
Let's hope not.
