A motorcycle adventure: riding with my brother
Inspired by Abby Clabough, Denver Motorcycle Travel Examiner, and her story about riding for the first time with her son, Dan, I decided to share my story of riding with my brother, Jack.
Jack has been my brother for over 50 years but on that warm summer afternoon, we did something together that we had never done before; we went for a ride on our Harleys.
Jack has held a motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license for many years but hadn’t been on bike in a long time and he had never owned a Harley. He was starting to get the “bug” and I wanted to encourage him, so I offered to sell him my Sportster. After visiting me over the winter, sitting on my bike and getting a feel for it, he went home and a few days later called and we settled on a price. I then called a friend who had a Dyna Low Rider for sale and negotiated a price with her so I wouldn’t be without a bike.
A couple of weeks later, I delivered the bike and a helmet to Jack.
Since Jack and I don’t live near each other, we would e-mail back and forth, discussing our riding experiences. That wasn’t quite enough. So when the opportunity came up for a long weekend, my husband, David, and I rode our bikes to my hometown to visit with family and to get in a day of riding with Jack.
We headed out on Saturday morning with my sister-in-law Diana riding behind David on his Ultra Classic taking pictures. Our destination would be a small college town several miles away with a destination-type diner known for over 100 ice cream sundaes. Jack led the way with me close behind. Being the “big sister”, I was unconsciously scrutinizing his riding techniques. I had to admit, he rode well. And I was proud to be riding with him.
After lunch, where we ate the ice cream first and then ordered sandwiches, we headed home. As we got closer to Jack’s house, it started to rain. We only had a few miles to go so we pressed on. After getting back to the house, Jack said that was the first time his bike had ever been wet. I told him I had ridden in the rain many times. He repeated, “That is the first time my bike has ever been wet.” I smiled and knew I had made a good decision to make my first Harley my brother’s first Harley.
