After winning the coveted American Motorcycle Association sport bike championship just over month ago, the first victory for an American bike since 1986, Harley-Davidson announced last week that it was shutting down the Buell line. Now Buell motorcycle owners and fans are asking The Motor Company for a second chance.
Buell has operated in the red and struggled against Japanese and European competitors and Harley-Davidson has provided millions of dollars to make it a competitive brand. With profits and income down 84% for the third quarter of 2009, the Motor Company announced several cost savings measures including the discontinuation of the Buell brand.
A letter writing campaign has started. Enthusiasts are writing to Harley-Davidson CEO Keith Wandell, wanting H-D to reconsider the decision to shut down Buell Motorcycle Company after years of not making a profit.
Buell riders are arguing for the fledging brand to remain with Harley-Davidson as a way to attract the younger rider.
Harley-Davidson is trying to streamline the brand with the dismissal of Buell and the MV Agusta line.
Only time will tell if H-D is making the right decision with the single focus branding.
