Amendment 48, also known as the "personhood" amendment, would legally define a fertilized egg as a human being. In other words, if challenged to answer the age-old question of the chicken and the egg, 48's supporters would argue that the chicken came first because the egg was not just an egg, but also a chicken. Wait... what?
Besides the obvious legal implications to issues of abortion and birth control, the amendment could also impact literally thousands of laws, including those pertaining to inheritance rights and access to courts. It might just be the most insane amendment ever placed on a statewide ballot.
This is supposed to be the cue for political blowhards such as myself to blather on about how amendments like this are only put on the ballot during presidential elections by Karl Rove-types so that the base turns out to vote for it, and hey, while they're at it, the Republican presidential candidate as well. Except this time, that's not the case.

Amendment 48 was placed on the ballot almost singlehandedly (she had the help of a lawyer) by a 21-year-old home-schooled scrapper named Kristi Burton. She is a force to be reckoned with and the right wing media has already taken notice. Watch Burton valiantly defend this turkey in a debate on KBDI and tell me that she doesn't have a future on Fox News. This will not be the last time that we hear her name, not by a long shot.
