Despite a soggy week of rain, hail, and high winds, the 2009 Sturgis Rally tallied increases in attendance, injury accidents, and DUI's, according to early statistics from the state of South Dakota. State traffic monitors showed a 2.9% increase over 2008 and sales tax revenues appear to be a strong 12% higher.
With the increase in participants came a disproportionate spike in the rally's bad news: 72 injury accidents and 316 DUI's both up sharply from last year.
The stats:
| 2009 | 2008 | +/- | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Injury accidents | 72 | 60 | +20% |
| DUI arrests | 316 | 253 | +25% |
| Drug arrests | 153 | 191 | -20% |
| Felony drug arrests | 43 | 35 | +23% |
| Other felony arrests | 3 | 6 | -50% |
| Citations | 1803 | 1619 | +11% |
| Concealed weapon arrests | 6 | 7 | -17% |
| Vehicles seized | 10 | 5 | +100% |
Five riders died in motorcycle accidents connected to the rally, but according to Sheriff Ron Merwin, it was the first time since 1991 that there were no fatal accidents in Sturgis or the surrounding counties.
