And likewise a frostbitten thermometer can be a major factor in fantasy football.
Yes, it's that time of year when the weather must be considered heavily when doing lineups. You could be one quarterback in the snow from being knocked out of playoff position or, worse yet, getting eliminated from the fantasy postseason.
Here are three rules of thumb when weighing how much the projected weather should affect your lineup decisions:
* Be wary of bad warm-weather teams traveling into chilly situations. In other words, if you're going with pretty much anyone from the AFC or NFC West outdoors on the road these days, you're crazy.
* Never play a kicker at a bad-weather site. I don't care who he is. The waiver wire is full of second-rate guys who have the potential to shine indoors or in decent weather each week. It sure beats watching your bundled-up guy unsuccessfully try to convince his coach he should be sent in to try a 45-yarder into the wind.
* The worse the weather, the better the defense. There is far less scoring and many more mistakes made when the players are uncomfortable with the conditions. You can take advantage of this by playing a defense in miserable conditions.
