Heavy rains cause reduced visibility for all vehicles on the road. Source: Wikipedia/Malinaccier

Any avid motorcyclist in New Hampshire has been riding in the rain at some point this year, it seems unavoidable.

There are certain safety measures that are important to take before riding in the rain.  Consider some of these tips before heading out into the wet wilderness, or before you get caught in one of New Hampshire's summer afternoon thunderstorms:

  • The first 15 minutes of rain is the most dangerous when embedded oils are released from the pavement.  When caught in a sudden rain, consider stopping for a coffee until the oils have a few minutes to run off the roadway.
  • If you ride in the rain regularly, consider running a pair of 'wet track' aggressive tread tires n your motorcycle.  You'll hold the roadway with considerably more grip both on acceleration and cornering.
  • Waterproof yourself!  When you become uncomfortable, you focus more on making yourself comfortable than on safety.  An inexpensive rain suit (jacket with hood, and pants) will cost you $30, and a pair of waterproof gloves and boots will suit just fine.
  • Wear all of your gear.  There are no two ways around it; riding in the rain is considerably more dangerous than riding on dry surfaces.  Be prepared and equipped with a full-face helmet, padded jacket and appropriately worn long-pants.
  • Anti-fog your helmet.  Use an inexpensive anti-fog 'wet wipe' to coat the inside of your face shield.  The added moisture from the rain will fog the inside of your helmet quickly.
  • When you're done riding, dry, clean and re-lubricate your chain to combat rust and excessive wear.

Remember riding in the rain can be safe.  It is important to make sure larger vehicles are able to see you. (Note the reduced visibility in the photo featured above).  In unusually heavy rain, utilize your emergency flashers (if equipped), and always know your riding limits.  Do not hesitate to pull off under a bridge or another safe location until dangerous conditions pass.

Even with a rainy New Hampshire summer, you can still get out and enjoy the roads!
