Women's Professional Soccer brandishing talent and discipline
Not even 2 months old, Women’s Professional Soccer has already suspended four players and given one coach community
service.
After the, dare I say, horribly officiated match between the St. Louis Athletica and the Washington Freedom, the WPS Disciplinary Committee found no infractions amongst the teams or officiating crew. WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci felt otherwise. She suspended Washington Freedom Forward Abby Wambach for a tackle that may have potentially ending the season of
Athletica midfielder Daniela. Athletica defender Kia McNeill was suspended for a game for “persistent egregious conduct toward an opposing player.”
After sensing that Commissioner Antonucci is VERY serious about punishing transgressions, the WPS Disciplinary Committee suspended
Boston Breakers forward Christine Latham for two games and fined her $250 for throwing an elbow during the match against the Freedom on May 17.
Freedom midfielder Joanna Lohman was suspended one game for illegal contact above the shoulder. Lohman appealed, but the iron fist of Antonucci prevailed. Her suspension was upheld.
Boston Breaker head coach Tony DiCicco was fined $750 for comments he made about the officiating that was “prejudicial and detrimental to WPS.” He is also required to do four hours of soccer related community service.
If the players and coaches got the impression that this is going to be some street league where it is okay to throw elbows and talk trash then they will be woefully sorry. What do they think this is?
The WNBA? Women’s Professional Soccer is a sophisticated, high-class organization. The players
almost had to wear skirts for Pete’s sake! If one day you see the referee on the field with a ruler making sure the player’s shorts are the proper length then don’t be surprised.
